About Schuylkill Conservation District
Pennsylvania's conservation districts were established in 1945 when the General Assembly passed the Soil Conservation District Act, Act 217 of the General Assembly commonly known as the Conservation District Law. The state's 66 conservation districts serve as leaders addressing local natural resource concerns at the county level. The county conservation districts work to help people and communities take care of the natural resources in their area including soil, water, wildlife, trees and other plants. Using natural resources wisely helps insure their availability well into the future.
The Schuylkill Conservation District was formed in 1955 when Dr. James S. Shadle presented the County with a petition signed by County farmers. The District has evolved from an emphasis on soil conservation to one of all natural resource conservation efforts including erosion and sediment control, watershed protection, abandoned mine land remediation, environmental education, farmland preservation, farm conservation planning, outdoor recreation, riparian buffers, streambank stabilization, nutrient management, and land use.
Mission
The Schuylkill Conservation District protects and restores the county’s natural resources through education, cooperation, guidance, and technical assistance that promotes wise stewardship, responsible development, and sustainability.
Vision
The Schuylkill Conservation District strives to become an accessible local leader in natural resource conservation to create an improved environment and better quality of life throughout Schuylkill County.
